For those who missed the exhibition, One Hundred Masterpieces of Art Pottery, 1880-1930, that was presented by the Newark Museum between September 2009 and January 2010, reading this book will largely make up for it. Written by the museum’s Senior Curator and Curator of Decorative Arts, Ulysses Grant Dietz, the book provides a history of the museum’s fabled pottery collection and the evolution of art pottery before, during and after the Arts and Crafts period. The author discusses each of the art pottery masterpieces in the book (actually there are 111 of them) and illustrates his history and commentary with beautiful color photographs not only of the pots but also of their makers’ labels and marks. For the novice, this highly readable book is a great introduction to art pottery; for the experienced collector it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a world-class, museum quality collection without having to make the trek to Newark.
