This attractive hardcover book doubled as the catalog for the auction of one of the most important private collections of early Gustav Stickley furniture ever sold. The auction was conducted on May 20, 2012 at the Toomey Auction Gallery in Oak Park, Illinois. “La Hacienda” was an estate in Buffalo Park, Colorado designed and constructed by prominent Denver architect Frederick Sterner for John L. Jerome. In July 1902 the home was decorated with Gustav Stickley furniture, William Morris wallpaper, and outfitted with Indian artifacts, an extensive book collection as well as Caproni plaster sculptural reliefs above several fireplaces. All of these furnishing remained intact up until the sale. The owner’s taste in furniture was influenced by his visit to the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York at which Gustav Stickley’s furniture was exhibited. The text of the book by noted author Thomas K. Maher describes how the house came to be built, biographical information about the Jeromes, how the house was furnished, and why the collection was sold. Full color photos of early Gustav Stickley furniture in pristine condition, including many close-ups, illustrate the stunning beauty of this one-of-a-kind collection.
