Prior to 1977 most early 20th Century metalcrafters were totally unknown. But that year a landmark exhibition organized by Sharon Darling, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Chicago Historical Society, brought many of these masters into the public view for the first time. Her catalog for this exhibition, Chicago Metal-Smiths, has remained the standard reference work on this topic for over four decades. While Darling’s focus was limited to Chicago makers, she highlighted most of the important craftspeople of the era.
